Ice Records is the label of the internationally successful recording artist Eddy Grant.
Ice Records started releasing calypso records in the late seventies, licensing some of the biggest hits from Trinidad for international release.
In the early 1980s, Eddy Grant based himself in Barbados and built a recording studio there. Grant started producing local calypsonians (notably Gabby and Grynner) releasing the productions on his Ice label.
The initial productions were extremely successful locally with some of the songs, particularly Gabby's "Boots", achieving international success.
In the early 1990s, Ice and Grant made a number of significant moves to get the music of Trinidad and Barbados major international exposure:
Grant acquired the rights to a huge catalogue of old calypsos, including the entire back catalogues of the Mighty Sparrow and Lord Kitchener, and began to release compilations in the Calypso Classics series.
Many of the biggest names in calypso, including Sparrow, the Roaring Lion, Black Stalin, Calypso Rose, Duke and Superblue were signed to Ice.
Eddy Grant created a new variety of caribbean music, termed Ring-Bang.
Grant released an album of cover versions of calypso standards, "Soca Baptism".
Via a major distribution deal, Ice made sure that their releases were available in all major record stores and even places that would never normally carry soca, such as K-Marts!
Two of the ring-bang records were huge hits internationally - Gabby's "Dr. Cassandra" and Viking Tundah's "Ring-a-Ring-a-Ring-Bang".
Ice looked set for big things, Sadly it didn't last. Ice were troubled by litigation problems (termed "rights wars" by Grant) for several years, when the ownership of his companies was challenged; the Calypso Classics series ended, and Ice releases became virtually impossible to find internationally.
However Ice continued recording Gabby, Duke and Calypso Rose, with occasional releases appearing on the Blue Wave label.
The legal problems finally appear to have been resolved (in Grant's favour!), and Ice has seemingly been re-activated in 2003, with a new CD from Duke (featuring material recorded up to 2001), re-issues of the Soca Carnival series and a new compilation entitled "Saucy Calypsos", details of which have not been discovered at time of writing.
