UK based record label run by the soca DJ Smokey Joe.
The label's releases were a mix of licensed re-issues from New York/Caribbean labels and original productions. The selection of the material licensed by the label was first rate. Big soca hits such as Merchant's "Rock It", Sparrow's "Don't Back Back" and Penguin's "Soft Man" received their UK release on the label. Some early productions were reggae as opposed to soca, with Christine Lewin's lovers rock version of Tyrone Davis' "In the Mood" being a highlight.
Early soca productions were mostly cover versions of Caribbean hits, but the label started concentrating on original productions in the early 90s; these included Luta's monarchy winning calypsos of 1994.
The 12" format was phased out in the late 1990s and the label now puts out regular CD releases.
The best of the earlier 12" releases were compiled on the Soca Gold CD series, which should still be readily available.
Many of the releases are still available from the TJ Records shop in the Arndale Centre in Wandsworth (South London).
